Peter was 6 holes clear of the field with an awesome score of +11. Peter claimed an excellent trophy provided by Adam Boxsell. 6 shots behind, Lachlan Bill and Russell Lieschke recorded +5, while Greg Hosking (+4), Tony Clewett (+4) and Kevin Peterson (+3) may have ordinarily had hopes of a close win, but, in reality, were dreaming. Josh Whittaker counterbalanced Peters astounding win with a -12 score top convincingly secure the special ball.

Roger Holgate won the progressive cometition with +16, while Eddie Hawkins (The other Eddie) and Josh Whittaker won the nearest to the pin prizes on the 7th and 12th holes. An excellent mix of potential winners were in contention with juniors, seniors, regulars and ladies all represented among the high scorers. Ultimately, Bryson Plumb was the victor with an excellent score of 29 points (equivalent to 41 points on golflink) outscoring Ray Waters on 28. Junior Grant Mooney (26), Bryson (again on 26 points), Di Schmitt, lady (25 points), Eddie Hawkins, veteran (25 points) and Lachlan Bill, junior (25 points) made up the ball rundown. Players were relaxed and, apart from your scribe, enjoyed the opportunity to play golf without pressure. For some, however it is still a struggle. Your scribe is still coming to terms with the fact that, despite playing with a (very talented) lady partner, he was lucky to achieve the six tee shots required for the round. As we learn, length is not the most important thing, it is how you use it.

In the end, Lindsay (Life's Good) Gegg and Marty Weise were the victors with a nett 59 strokes. Marty is always a handy Ambrose partner and his short game and putting were well tuned for the day. Lindsay, as always, went with the flow and played to his strengths for an excellent win. Three quarters of a shot behind, Andrew Kadwell and Steve McCrorey recorded 59.75 while A graders John Smith and Scott Nolan (the A grade nett and gross winners from the championships) disappointed observers with a third place, nett 60. Russell Schmitt and Alan Bill, out early with 61.5 also made the ball rundown along with the "Department of Education", Russell Lieschke and Eddie Hawkins on 61.75 in a 3 card countback.

Eddie Sivell did not have to wait long to win the nearest to the pin on the 2nd hole, although he did have to wait later, while Roger Holgate was nearest on the 14th hole. Marty Weise topped off an excellent day out by winning the raffle and taking home a dozen of Srixons or Carlton Uniteds finest.

The Cock O' The Walk competition resumes in next weeks par event with Charlie McDonald and partner challenging Nathan Rumble and Mick Simpson. On current form, Rumbos and Simmo are odds on favourites unless Charlie can outbid James Packer for a round with Tiger Woods. Even then...

The clubs Gala Day is to be held on Sunday, December 11th with all financial members welcome. The format for the day is yet to be decided, but rumour has it that a treasure hunt could be on the cards.

The Friday Chook Run is once again up an running, with social and handicap golfers all welcome. Cost is $7 and the round can be played any time on Friday. Please use the honesty box if the clubhouse is unattended.

At the last committee meeting, it was decided that the Sunday Competition would become the Weekend Competition. Players are able to compete in the Weekend Competition on either (or both) Saturday and Sunday. Play is open all day Saturday and should be completed by means of the honesty box in front of the clubhouse. Of course, cards must be marked, and comp fees paid in advance. It is planned that, with enough Saturday starters, a separate Saturday Competition can begin. Championship rounds are not included in this arrangement .

Half Year Memberships are also now available with forms available at the front of the Tully Park Clubhouse. Half year memberships (valid until 30/6/2012) will cost $120 for adults, $80 for pensioners, $50 for juniors (11-18) and $20 for sub juniors (<11). Winners can have their name preserved for prosperity or, unlike your scribe, the finest form can desert at the pivotal moment. A fantastic turnout of Tully Park members contested the 2011 Major Championships and a select few secured lasting glory. World famous golfer Brett Ogle is among the names that adorn the Tully Park honour boards as well as greats such as Bruce Devlin, Steve Elkington and Jack Newton. To win any championship at Tully Park earns a place in history.

But back to 2011. This years championships were fiercely contested in all grades, including a playoff for the B Grade Champion. Alan Bill was the D Grade Champion with afantastic score of (93, 101,102,97) 393 for the 72 hole stroke competition. Winning the C Grade Championship, Tully Parks best dressed golfer, Tim James, was 28 shots clear over Andrew Kadwell who took out the C Grade Nett prize. B Grade was the story of the championships. After 4 rounds, 72 holes and 349 strokes, Mick Harris and Russell Schmitt found themselves tied for the B Grade Champions title. Russell, as usual had been out early in the first group and had completed his round in (probably) less than 2 hours. Mick, meanwhile was savouring his good form, finishing his round some 3 hours later. PLAYOFF! In an exciting 3 hole play off Russell Schmitt claimed the B Grade title with a par on the 3rd playoff hole. In A Grade, Scott Nolan backed up his Tully Park Open Championship of last month, becoming clun (A Grade Champion) for 2011 with a score of 290. Scott was 10 shots clear of young Josh Whittaker (who will feature in coming years) and 20 shots clear of John Smith on 310. Scott shot a course record of 69 in his final round.

So to our champions.
A Grade: Scott Nolan 290 Gross, John Smith 264 Nett
B Grade: Russell Schmitt 349 Gross, Roger Holgate 283 Nett
C Grade: Tim James 351 Gross, Andrew Kadwell 291 Nett
D Grade: Alan Bill 393 Gross

The Rocky Harris Memorial Shield for the overall best nett score went to John Smith, the first time for many years that an A Grade player has won for many years.

It must be said that these championships were played in the best conditions for many years, due to the dedicated work of Greg Hosking and his volunteer crew. The greens and fairways continue to improve under his stewardship and rival those of many higher rated golf courses. Those excellent conditions had no effect on your scribes play throughout the championships as he explored every hidden corner of despair available at Tully Park Golf Club, on his way to his first ever special ball. Such is golf.

Your scribe is, however, somewhat of a trivia buff, and is inviting all and sundry to a Prawn and Chicken Trivia Night top be held at the Tully Park Clubhouse on Friday December 2nd. Excellent prizes and a world of fun are on offer along with the traditional Tully Park hospitality. Tables of 8 people may be booked at a cost of $25 per person. Last Sunday, the Tully Park Early Birds Golf Club, in conjunction with Ian and Wane, presented a day in which social and competition golfers played together in a 2 man ambrose event. The day was an outstanding success, with a fantastic turnout, and excellent trophies on offer.

The social winners for the day were Jason Bennett (using the baseball grip despite knowing better) and Steve Peterson who recorded a nett score of 64, while Mick Simpson, Disco Jansen and Marty Weise won the handicap division with 58.5. Also featuring were Scott Nolan and Charlie McDonald with 61.5, Ken Wray and Don Grimston, Neil Tozer and Peter Courts (61.75) and Tony Clewett and Kevin "Splinter" Peterson (62 nett).

Dave Gray won the nearest t the pin prize on the 5th hole while Ken Wray was inches away and hard to beat on the 12th. John Piggott won the raffle while chauffeuring a bowls group to the Central West. A delicious lunch was served by Pam McMahon and Jan Mills which accompanied a few soothing refreshments. Ron was a stalwart member of both clubs and, in his day, was a fine golfer and sportsman. Each year the two clubs celebrate Rons contributions by chasing that little white dimpled ball around the course. Both clubs were well represented and, as the weather held off, the day was an outstanding success.

The winning teams for each were Roy McNair and Lindsay Gegg, from Tully Park, with 46 points, and Don Grimston and D. O'Neill, from Workers Club, also with 46 points. These teams won trophies donated by Ray Turner and Gary Spence and by the Workers Club. A ball rundown went to 38 points and included B. Mills and W. McMahon (45 points), J. Smith and A. Tahana (45 points), E Hawkins and G. Serret (44), A. Kadwell and P. Elliott (43), T Clewett and K Peterson (43), S Tahana and J Whittaker (43), K Wray and R Lieschke (43), G Robertson and B Larkin (41), D Robertson and S Honeyman (40), N Townsend and T Druett (40) and P O'Brien and A Hazelton (38). Nearest to the pins went to G Serret on the 8th hole and E Hawkins on the 11th, while Captain Mills won the weekly raffle.

In the competition for the Ron Power Memorial Trophy, Tully Park were again victorious with an average of 42 points, defeating Workers with an average of 39 points. As always, the competition was fiercely contested, with many unlikely stories related afterward.

Next week, Ahoy Cleaning and Goulburn Trophies and Sportswear present their annual social day with a 2 man ambrose event. All golfers are invited to attend, even those without official handicaps and even those without talent. A barbeque lunch is included and a great day out is promised. Tee off from 7am to 8.30am.

A reminder to Tully golfers that the annual Major Championships are looming. Score a hole in 1 or an eagle 2 under par; plus 1. Miss a fairway, find a bunker or misread a put; that would be minus 1. For your scribe, minuses have become the norm, with even a square hole a rarity. It is possible that a 40 point round could be defeated by a 36 point round in a par event. Such is golf, thats why we love it. Steve McCrorey and Eddie Sivell were not thinking like that. They were going hole for hole, accumulating pluses and dodging the dreaded minuses. Both finished on +4 having ahead of Stewart Tahana (+3), Roger Holgate (+2), Nathan Rumble (+2) and Nikita Hosking (+1). The countback system decided the winner with Steve McCrorey declared as winner and claimed a generous trophy donated by Ken Wray. Tracker Tahana, at the other end of the scale recorded -7 and received the special ball for his lack of talent.

Nikita Hosking won the progressive comp with +17 while Nathan Rumble and Steve McCrorey won the nearest to the pins on the 14th and 12th holes. Steve also capped off a great comp by partnering with AndrewKadwell to win the Cock O The Walk, defeating Greg and Mick Hosking 2 up with one to play. Don Grimston was the weekly raffle winner and won a box of Hot Dots. Scott Nolan managed an eagle 3 on the last hole of his round, furthering his reputation as a complete athlete.

Next Sunday the committee presents a Overs v Unders Single Stableford event in which the Over Somethings Take on the Young Guns. The qualification to play as an Over is yet to be determined, but Captain Mills assures us that life experience will count highly. The Barry Pengelly Consistency round for September will be held in conjunction with this event.

All local golfers are reminded that Goulburns most prestigious title, the Lilac Time Open will be contested over 18 holes in mens, ladies and junior divisions on October 2nd. Entry forms are available on the web at www.tullyparkgolf.com or ring the club on 02 4822 2828. Defending champion, Scott Nolan, has reportedly been waking up at night screaming "I am the greatest!". This has yet to be confirmed with Scotts better half. The question remains, can anyone beat Scott? Is he really the complete athlete as reported during the soccer season? One round of golf will tell it all, for this year at least.

Midweek Competition

Last weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek competition saw a splendid mix of young and old, male and female winners. The main purpose of the meeting was to elect the committee for 2011. Some new committee members were elected and some stalwarts of the club took a step back, but the overall result is a strong and talented committee for 2011/2012. The elected committee are:
Patron: Barry Pengelly
President: Roger Holgate
Vice President: Marty Hunter
Treasurer: Kylie Hosking
Assistant Treasurer: John Piggott
Captain: Brian Mills
Vice Captain: Scott Nolan
Secretary: TBA
And: Geoff Fitzgibbon, Tim James, Charlie McDonald, Bill McMahon, Paul Hunter, Adam Boxsell, Nikita Hosking and Roy McNair.

Greg Hosking is notable in his absence from the committee having held the secretarys position for a number of years. Greg has made an incredible contribution to the club in this role for which the club is extremely grateful. Greg has also been taking care of the course as volunteer greenkeeper and he will be continuing in this demanding role. The amazing hours contributed by Greg and his family are a fine example of selfless volunteer work. Were it not for the Hosking family our club would not be as successful as it currently is. Also taking a step back is John Piggott who has held many committee roles over many many years, most notably as our dilligent treasurer in recent years. He has helped to put our club on a sound financial footing through his hard work, research and commitment. He has planned his escape over the last year or so, handing the financials over to Kylie Hosking but still on hand if required. The meeting unanimously expressed its deep gratitude to Greg and John for their significant contributions to the club.

Sunday Ambrose Competition

Last Sundays was a 2 person ambrose competition held in good conditions at Tully Park. A good roll up usually means a tight competition, but this week, despite the good numbers, Nikita Hosking and Tracker Tahana were unbeatable and romped home 2 1/4 shots clear of their nearest rival. With a nett 59, (2 over par off the stick) this pair outdid their handicaps by a long shot. They claimed an excellent trophy and bragging rights for the near future at least. Andrew Kadwell and Steve McCrorey were next in line with a worthy 61.25 while Eddie Sivell and Nathan Rumble were close behind with 62 1/2. Nikita was the winner of the nearest to the pin on the 5th hole while Rockin' Ronny Nunn won the drive and pitch on the 11th hole. Greg Hosking proved that genetics have no influence on golfing talent as he partnered Billy McMahon to take the special ball with nett 68.

Next Sundays competition is the August monthly medal stroke event, with a trophy donated by Ken Wray. Greens renovations are happening on Thursday, September 1st which will mean that the course will be closed on that day.

Golfers should get ready for Goulburns finest test of golf on Sunday, October 2nd. The annual Tully Park Lilac Time Open Golf Championship will be held over 18 holes with excellent trophies and prizes on offer. The Lilac Time Open is open to all golfers with official Golf Australia handicaps and will be contested in ladies, juniors and mens (3 grades) divisions. Last years champions, Bill McMahon and Adam Boxsell were ready to defend their title while a number of predictable and unusual teams were assembled, ready to take their tilt.

Captain Brian Mills took Scott Nolan (The Complete Athlete) under his wing and showed Scott the cunning route. Brian and Scott combined well to set the first round benchmark of nett 63.5 (gross 77). President Roger Hogate and Wally Thorn were a predictable combination recording 64/88 to sit half a shot astern, while father ad son combination Greg and Michael Hosking finished 3.5 shots behind the leaders with 67/82. Also still in the running were Don Grimston and Ken Wray (67.5/86) and title holders Bill McMahon and Adam Boxsell (68.5/86). After the first round, no clear favourite was evident, and as always, the winner would not be easily discovered.

Round 2, Sunday August 14th
Traditionally in the final round of a championship, favourites fail, dark horses make a charge and out of the blue comes a winner. And so it was. Greg and Michael Hosking played the best foursomes rounds in 15 years to record an excellent score of 60 nett (75 gross) to take out the Foursmes Championships with a total nett score of 157. In doing so, Greg and Michael recorded one of the lowest foursomes scores in the last 20 years. They are also the second father/son combinattion to win the foursomes according to the champions board, the last being Neil and Lindsay Gegg in 2004.

Don Grimston and Ken Wray were next with 61.5/80 to claim the overall gross prize, while Jahn and Pat Smith (no relation), Nathan Rumble and Andrew Kadwell, and Wally Thorn and Roger Holgate all had sub par rounds. Nearest to the Pin pris\zes went to Stewart Tahana (5th hole), Tracker Tahana (7th hole) and Bill McMahon (14th hole), while Gary Spence won the weekly raffle.

Next week the club is conducting an 18 hole, 2 man ambrose competition, in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting with a generous trophy donated by Moonshine Sand and Soil. Looming on the horizon is the Tully Park Lilac Time Open - Goulburns only Open Championship which will be held during Lilac Time on the October Long Weekend.

McMahon Ratcliffe Match Play Competition - 2nd Round

The first round of the McMahon Ratcliffe 12 ole matchplay competition has been completed and the next round of matches decided. With a previously lean run, speculators rated Rons recent chances of winning as Buckleys and none. Ron proved the punters wrong, recording an excellent 41 points for his round and claiming the generous trophy donated by Kerry Bensley. Ron was a 2 shot winner over Michael Hosking, Ken Wray and Gary Spence who all carded a competitive 39 points. Phil Elliott and Royce Dockett also featured with 38 points each.

Roger Holgate was nearest to the pin on the 5th hole, while "The Other" Eddie Hawkins won the drive and pitch on the 12th hole. Nikita Hosking was unlucky on the day to win the special ball with a not unrespectable 30 points.

In other Sunday news, Tracker Tahana and Adam Boxsell played excellent folf to make the ball rundown in the regional final of the NSW Mens Four Ball Best Ball Championships at Cooma Golf Club. Charlie McDonald and Marty Hunter were not so excellent. Cooma turned on all four seasons for the players, but made up for that with excellent hospitality which was eagerly accepted by the intrepid four. Firstly, the swing must be on plane, silky smooth and deliciously reliable. The short game has to be tight, with a full array of chips, flops, bump and runs and pitches all honed to perfection. The putter has to be on fire, the planets must align and a butterfly in the Amazon has to alight upon a flower in exactly the right way. Meet Eddie Sivell.

Eddies run began a three weeks ago when he won the Sunday Stableford comp with 42 points. Two weeks ago Eddie was 2 points better, carding 44 points. Last week he won the Monthly Medal and Stroke competition with 81 strokes for a nett 60 score to collect a generous trophy donated by Tim James.. Eddie has played to an average of 7 shots better than his handicap for most of July. But it won't last. Big Bertha has been watching. In fact Eddies handicap has already taken a hit and will continue to head south in the next few weeks. It is an excellent achievement and rare air for a golfer.

In other news, Eddie (The Other Eddie) Hawkins took out the progressive competition with na nett 41 shots. Marty Hunter took out A Grade with nett 63 and Stewart Tahana won B Grade with 67 nett. Eddie Sivell won C Grade while he was at it. President Roger Holgate was declared the raffle winner while Marty Hunter and Scott Nolan claimed the nearest to the pin prizes on the 7th and 11th holes. Andrew Kadwell, Brian Mills, Darrell Spence and John Smith all posted excellent scores but lacked one of the essential elements mentioned above. Darren "Disco" Jansen lacked all of those elements as he claimed the special ball.

Next week the committee presents a Stableford competition for members enjoyment. This is also designated as an Open event, meaning that players from other golf clubs are welcome to play and will pay comp fees only. The Tully Park Foursomes Championships are also looming and will be played over 36 holes on the 13th and 14th of August. The Annual General Meeting is slated for August 21st along with a 2 Person Ambrose competition. The McMahon/Ratcliffe Matchplay competition is in full swing and players are reminded to play their matches as soon as possible. "The Baz" is the Barry Pengelly Consistency Competition in which the best 8 rounds of 12 possible monthly rounds count for each player. The player with the best total score wins the generous trophy and bragging rights for the next 12 months.

Eddie Sivell made a strong claim this week with an excellent 44 points. Eddie gained some ground on the tearaway leader Billy McMahon, who failed to card a significant round. Eddie also won an excellent trophy, consisting of a portable charcoal barbeque and BBQ toos, donated by juniors Michael and Nikita Hosking. Tony Clewett was the winner of the progressive competition with an unbeatable 62 points, while Stewart Tahana won the weekly raffle. Captain Brian Mills, Don Grimston, Royce Dockett, John Smith, Gary and Daryl Spence (no relation) and Michael Hosking rounded out the ball rundown. Roy McNair took no prisoners as he rampaged his way to the special ball with 20 points. In contrast, Roys new driver is giving him great joy.

The cock of the walk competition saw a change of guard with Eddie Hawkins and Charlie McDonald yielding to Mick Simpson and Nathan Rumble. Micks 5 point (sand save, chip in) birdie on the 16th and 3 point par on the 17th proved too much for Eddie and Charlie in an excellent cut and thrust match. Mick and Nate won 2 up with 1 to play.

Next weeks competition is the monthly medal in conjunction with a stroke event. Tim James is slated as the trophy donor this week and will undoubtedly have an interesting trophy from his recent trip to Thailand.
