Sivell Snares Sunday Stroke Event

It is not often that a player is able to win consecutive competitions in golf, let alone three in a row. Firstly, the swing must be on plane, silky smooth and deliciously reliable. The short game has to be tight, with a full array of chips, flops, bump and runs and pitches all honed to perfection. The putter has to be on fire, the planets must align and a butterfly in the Amazon has to alight upon a flower in exactly the right way. Meet Eddie Sivell.

Eddies run began a three weeks ago when he won the Sunday Stableford comp with 42 points. Two weeks ago Eddie was 2 points better, carding 44 points. Last week he won the Monthly Medal and Stroke competition with 81 strokes for a nett 60 score to collect a generous trophy donated by Tim James.. Eddie has played to an average of 7 shots better than his handicap for most of July. But it won't last. Big Bertha has been watching. In fact Eddies handicap has already taken a hit and will continue to head south in the next few weeks. It is an excellent achievement and rare air for a golfer.

In other news, Eddie (The Other Eddie) Hawkins took out the progressive competition with na nett 41 shots. Marty Hunter took out A Grade with nett 63 and Stewart Tahana won B Grade with 67 nett. Eddie Sivell won C Grade while he was at it. President Roger Holgate was declared the raffle winner while Marty Hunter and Scott Nolan claimed the nearest to the pin prizes on the 7th and 11th holes. Andrew Kadwell, Brian Mills, Darrell Spence and John Smith all posted excellent scores but lacked one of the essential elements mentioned above. Darren "Disco" Jansen lacked all of those elements as he claimed the special ball.

Next week the committee presents a Stableford competition for members enjoyment. This is also designated as an Open event, meaning that players from other golf clubs are welcome to play and will pay comp fees only. The Tully Park Foursomes Championships are also looming and will be played over 36 holes on the 13th and 14th of August. The Annual General Meeting is slated for August 21st along with a 2 Person Ambrose competition. The McMahon/Ratcliffe Matchplay competition is in full swing and players are reminded to play their matches as soon as possible. The first round matches are due to be finalised by this Sunday, August 7th.

Sunday Stableford

Round 7 of "The Baz " was the focus of the day as an excellent field competed in the single stableford competition. "The Baz" is the Barry Pengelly Consistency Competition in which the best 8 rounds of 12 possible monthly rounds count for each player. The player with the best total score wins the generous trophy and bragging rights for the next 12 months.

Eddie Sivell made a strong claim this week with an excellent 44 points. Eddie gained some ground on the tearaway leader Billy McMahon, who failed to card a significant round. Eddie also won an excellent trophy, consisting of a portable charcoal barbeque and BBQ toos, donated by juniors Michael and Nikita Hosking. Tony Clewett was the winner of the progressive competition with an unbeatable 62 points, while Stewart Tahana won the weekly raffle. Captain Brian Mills, Don Grimston, Royce Dockett, John Smith, Gary and Daryl Spence (no relation) and Michael Hosking rounded out the ball rundown. Roy McNair took no prisoners as he rampaged his way to the special ball with 20 points. In contrast, Roys new driver is giving him great joy.

The cock of the walk competition saw a change of guard with Eddie Hawkins and Charlie McDonald yielding to Mick Simpson and Nathan Rumble. Micks 5 point (sand save, chip in) birdie on the 16th and 3 point par on the 17th proved too much for Eddie and Charlie in an excellent cut and thrust match. Mick and Nate won 2 up with 1 to play.

Next weeks competition is the monthly medal in conjunction with a stroke event. Tim James is slated as the trophy donor this week and will undoubtedly have an interesting trophy from his recent trip to Thailand. Upcoming events include for August include the Tully Park Foursomes Championships, contested over 36 holes on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th of August as well as the Annual General Meeting Ambrose competition slated for August 21st. All club members are eligible for a position on the TPEBGC committee, including lady, social and mens members. The more diverse the committee, the better we can cater to the diverse needs of the golfing community.

Midweek Competition

Royce "Double O" Dockett easily won the midweek competition this week in a competition consisting of equal numbers of ladies and gentlemen golfers. It is encouraging for the committee to see that the ladies are enjoying the midweek competition, for which a $20 voucher redeemable at the Goulburn Soldiers Club is played each week.

Royce was 3 shots clear of Tracker Tahana, recording 26 points. Tracher carded 23 points followed by Mick Hosking who edged out his dad, Greg Hosking in a countback. Helen Carne was the special ball recipient with 5 points.

Matchplay Competition

The McMahon and Ratcliffe 12 Hole Matchplay Competition is underway for 2011. Matchplay is considered by some as the true test of golf where "mano e' mano" is the order of the day. In matchplay, the only consideration is holing out in less (handicapped) shots than your opponent. Holes can be conceded, prudence and aggression can rule at different times. It is a very different form of golf to traditional stroke and stableford events. This is the only club level matchplay competition played at Tully Park and it is keenly fought each year. It is with great pleasure and with a keen sense of anticipation that the committee presents this years first round draw:

N. Rumbles v L. Gegg
S. Nolan v Bye
W. McMahon v W. Minney
K. Wray v A. Tahana
G. Hosking v K. Peterson
K. Bensley v D. Spence
P. Elliott v Bye
P. Courts v M. Wilson
R. Lieschke v T. Clewett
C. McDonald v P. Hunter
S. Tahana v S. McCrorey
D. Jansen v D. Dingle
L. Bill v G. Mooney
N. Hosking v Bye
J. Smith v E. Sivell
M. Hunter v J. Whittaker

J. Peterson v D. Grimston
B. Larkin v R. Dockett
W. James v A. Winters
R. Waters v L. Adams
M. Harris v T. James
R. Nunn v A. Bill
G. Spence v R. Schmitt
E. Hawkins v Bye
A. Kadwell v R. Turner
W. Thorn v Bye
B. Fitzgibbon v M. Hosking
G. Piazza v M. Simpson
R. Holgate v G. Fitzgibbon
R. McNair v J. Piggott
A. Boxsell v P. Wheeldon
B. Mills v M. Weise

Good luck to all.

Stableford

Sundays stableford competition conditions were significantly better than those of the previous week as a strong field contested a stableford competition at Tully Park. Eddie Sivell was the comp winner carding a strong 42 points to win a generous trophy provided by Kevin "Splinter" Peterson. Charlie McDonald faltered in his back 9 holes with 3 out of bounds and a triple bogie to record 39 points for second place and win the progressive voucher. Gary Spence  was close behind with 38 points while Don Grimston, Roger Holgate and Russell Lieschke scored 36 points. "Disco" Stu Tahana was out of sorts after a working holiday at Nimmitabel. Charlie McDonald won the Nearest to the Pin on the 7th hole while Tracker Tahana crafted a miraculous second shot from the woods to win the Drive and Pitch on the 13th hole. Tracker also showed some talent as he crafted a miraculous win in the weekly raffle.

In the Cock O' The Walk competition, Eddie Hawkins and Charlie McDonald slaughtered "The Toranas" defeating Stewart and Tracker on the 10th hole, 9 up with 8 to play. Eddie and Charlie won their COW badges (earned after 3 consecutive wins) and a pick from the mystery prize board. Their next opponents are Mick "Kentucky Fried" Simpson and Darren "Disco" Jansen. Mick and Darren will need to bring their best games as Eddie and Charlie have been convincing winners in recent weeks.

Midweek Competition

Nikita Hosking finally showed her potential last week as she took out the Gouburn Soldiers Club Midweek competition with a 2 stroke victory. Nikita recorded an excellent 31 points, playing a round worthy of a 13 handicapper. Royce "Double O' Dockett was the next best with 29 points followed by Rose Booth on 28 points. This is Roses best round since October, proving that persistence and application is the key to winning golf. Don Grimston and John Peterson rounded up the ball rundown with 26 points.

Sunday Stroke Competition

A shivering field contested a stroke event last Sunday at Tully Park Golf Club with glacial temperatures and a howling wind providing an extra challenge for most competitors. Club captain Brian Mills was the exception, apparently unfazed by the arctic conditions. Recording 85 shots off the stick for a nett 62, "Millsy" had his best round for some time winning 8 shots clear of his nearest competitor. Don Grimston was next with nett 70 followed by Charlie McDonald (73), John Smith (74), Eddie Hawkins (76) and "Wee" Willy McMahon (76). Marty Weise won the special ball with a nett 82 on a countback.

Patron Barry Pengelly was the raffle winner while John Smith won the nearest to the pin on the 5th hole. Eddie Hawkins and Charlie McDonald defeated Tracker Tahana and new member Rob Galloway in the Cock O The Walk competition by a significant margin.

Next week the committee has planned a single stableford event. An optional side "Footy Teams" competition will be run with competitors contributing $5 to a pot and nominating the football team they will be playing for. The best average scoring team will share the pot and will have bragging rights for a short time. Your scribes tip is Collingwood. Go Pies!

Fundraiser Day an Outstanding Success

Warm ups were mostly inside
The committee of Tully Park Golf Club were speechless at the incredible response to their Fundraiser Day held last Saturday in arctic conditions. The golf course was filled to capacity with 80 odd competitors contesting a 2 man ambrose event in many divisions. With 6 players on nearly every tee and a shotgun start, the pace was anything but quick, however some relief was available during the round.

Greg Hosking manned the "Tent Embassy" on the 9th hole (complete with a welcoming fire) serving delicious egg and bacon rolls as well as his famous warming potions mid round, while Scotty Nolan hit drives for cash off the third tee. After 40 low value swings, Scotty began to provide some value for his customers. In doing so, Scott and Greg raised a significant amount for the club.

By 2pm or so the field had returned to the clubhouse to be greeted by tantalising wafts of roasting meat and vegetables and some shelter from the relentless wind and cold. The Early Birdies Bistro hit top speed with succulent spit roasted meats, luscious vegetables and flavoursome gravies and sauces flying in all directions. Matt, George and Garry would have loved it, although the golfers only cared about getting something warm to eat. With much panic and many calls of "Yes Chef" the worst disaster was a slight shortage of cauliflower and gravy. Otherwise service went off without a hitch.

After lunch, the formalities provided much excitement as the wintery conditions had blurred any insight regarding the pre game form. Presidents Roger Holgate and Pauline Hall kicked off proceedings thanking everyone for their valued attendance, as well as thanking the club volunteers for their (considerable) work on the day. Captains Brian Mills and Joy Leary then began the extensive list of prizes that had been won. An extensive ball rundown ensued, followed by an excellent raffle. Stan Lineham won the major raffle prize, and 20 or so minor prizes ensued.

The committee would like to thank all competitors for their support as well as the horde of volunteers who helped out with the event. They would also like to thank the businesses and individuals who contributed and donated goods and prizes for the day, being 9000 Hair Centre, The Petersons, Goulburn Soap World, Vintage House Homeware and Gifts, Soul Pattinson Chemists, Elaine Sharman, Maxwell and Kemp, Joy Leary, Goulburn Trophys, Beryl and Dick Howe, Harris Scarfe, Val Allen, Farmer Felds, Barry Pengelly, Penrith Golf Factory, Wally Thorn, Murrays Meats, Goulburn Party Hire and Wal Buckland.

The whole event was an outstanding success and exceeded the committees expectations by a long shot. Golfers can rest assured that Goulburns premier golf club will be holding this event again. Although it will be hard to surpass such a wonderfull day, the Tully Park Committee promises a bigger and better event next year.

Tully Park Fundraiser this Saturday - Bookings Essential

It is shaping up as one of the biggest days at Tully Park in some time with a near capacity field anticipated for the Tully Park Golf Club Fundraiser this Saturday, July 9th. Due to the excellent response bookings are now essential if you would like to play in what promises to be an outstanding day of fun golf. Book your place by ringing the club (02 4821 1868 - leave a message) or email tpebgc@goulburn.net.au. Cost is $20 per head which includes golf, a gourmet spit roast lunch and lots of fun. There will be a host of prizes including nearest to the pin and longest drive prizes as well as raffles and more. The competition is a 2 person ambrose (2 people tee off, choose the best shot then both play from that spot, and so on), so a lack of golfing talent is not an excuse, just choose a good partner.

American Foursomes

The unusual format of American Foursomes was the competition of the day last Sunday as an excellent field competed for a generous trophy presented by Andrew Kadwell and Steve McCrorey. American Foursomes requires a team of 2 players to tee off, play each others second shot then, choosing the best option, playing alternate shots to the hole. Gary Spence and Phil Elliott  mastered the format recording a score of nett 62. Adam Boxsell and Charlie McDonald  were next best with 62 7/8 followed by Brian Mills and Bill McMahon (63) and "The Toranas", Stuart and Tracker Tahana (63 1/2). Adam Boxsell was nearest to the pin on the 8th hole while Tony Clewett was closest on the 5th.

Next weeks Sunday competition is a single stroke event with a trophy donated by Adam Boxsell. Club members are reminded that nominations for the club committee are now open in anticipation of the upcoming AGM. All members are encouraged to consider nomination, including lady members and social members.

Midweek Competition

An outstanding field contested this weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition with excellent weather coaxing many sets of golf clubs out of the closet. The large field did not necessarily lead to high scores however with 29 points winning the Goulburn Soldiers Club voucher. Wayne James was the owner of that score narrowly beating Eddie Hawkins and K Breen (visitor from Tathra Golf Club) by a point. Don Grimston scored 27 points while Kevin Peterson and Bryson Plumb recorded 26 points. Joy Leary lead a host of lady contestants with 23 points . Helen Carne rounded up the field with 10 points.
