Minor Championships 2011

The Tully Park Early Birds Golf Club Minor Championships were held last weekend over 36 holes. Conditions were excellent on both days as a large field set out to fight for a place on the champions board.

Saturdays round did not produce many good scores with only two players bettering their handicap relative to par. In A Grade, Scott Nolan (70 nett) and Charlie McDonald (69) were well placed, while Nathan Rumble seemed to have one hand on the B Grade with 65 nett. Andrew Kadwell and Eddie Sivell (68) nett were leading C Grade and Royce Dockett was in the drivers seat in D Grade with nett 69.

Sundays round was full of promise for some and hope for others. Ultimately, many promises were broken and hopes dashed, while the victors celebrated their awesome achievements. In the end only two of the first round leaders managed to hold on to their Championship leads, while late chargers stole the day in most grades. John Smith shot 3 over par for a nett 59 to win the Sunday round and the Monthly Medal. Marty Hunter was also in contention with a competetive 79 (nett 65). Greg Hosking also played well recording 78 (61 nett) with Billy McMahon carding 80 (62 nett). Darrell Spence, Eddie Sivell and Royce Dockett also did their chances of glory no harm as they recorded excellent second rounds. Nearest to the pin prizes went to Disco Jansen on the 7th and Eddie Sivell on the 11th.

In the wash up the Tully Park Minor Champions were:
A Grade: John Smith (151 gross), Ken Wray (139 nett). B Grade: Greg Hosking (167 gross), Bill McMahon (133 nett). C Grade: Eddie Sivell (181 gross), Darrel Spence (135 nett). Royce Dockett (193 gross), Alan Bill (151 nett). Ladies: Nikita Hosking (185 gross and 147 nett).

Tully Park Raises Funds and Awareness for Prostate Cancer

The Goulburn Prostate Cancer Support Group were very appreciative of the hospitality and generosity shown by members and guests at Tully Parks annual Charity Golf Day. Ken Sullivan, representing the group, expressed his appreciation while stressing the importance of having regular check ups for males over the age of 50. The message was well received as many members know, or know of, someone who has suffered from this insidious disease. Club President Roger Holgate was pleased to present the Goulburn Prostate Cancer Support Group with a generous donation on behalf of the members, which was well received by Ken. This is the fourth year that Tully members have supported this charity.

With regard to golf, the day could not have been better. The weather was absolutely fantastic, albeit a little frosty early on, with the biting wind abating and the sun at its autumnal best. The food was gourmet class with Greg and Kylie Hosking providing the highest standard of sausage sanger at the midway point and a divine lunch prior to a celebratory drink and the presentations. Adam Boxsell, Nikita Hosking and Brad Kolosque were the major winners on the day, with Adam winning the mens stableford (42 points on a counback over Tracker Tahana), Nikita edging out Debbie Collins and Terry Melham to win the ladies stableford with 34 points and Brad with nett 87.5 under the callaway scoring system topping the social scores. Each received a voucher or a generous trophy from Brian & Jan Mills and Goulburn Engineering.

Lindsay Gegg was shooting straight as he claimed the Nearest to the Pin on the 14th hole and the Drive and pitch on the 12th hole. The Don (Grimston) was at his favourite distance on the 5th hole and was unbeatable for the NTP on that hole. Mick Simpson forgot the moves as the music died in his journey to the special ball with 24 points. Royce Dockett (41), Nathan Rumble (40), Andrew Kadwell (39), Scott Nolan (39), John Smith (39), Wally Thorn (38), Gary Spence (38) and Ken Wray 38 made up the ball rundown from an excellent field.

Next Sunday the committee presents the ever popular two man ambrose event, with trophies donated by Peter Wheeldon. Members are also refining their games at the moment with an eye out for the Minor Championships, over 36 holes, planned for May 28 and May 29. The Minors are played in 4 mens grades plus juniors and ladies divisions. Your scribes favourites are: Scott Nolan and Ken Wray for A and B grade and Nikita Hosking and Lachlan Bill for the ladies and junior comps. Betting for C asnd D grade is a touch closer, but Roy McNair, Andrew Kadwell and Royce Dockett should figure here. Bring it on!

Sunday Stableford and Barry Bengelly Consistency Comp

Awesome weather and awesome scores were on display for Mothers Day at Tully Park Golf Club last Sunday. A single stableford competition run in conjunction with "The Baz" saw an excellent roll up, with all players hoping to snag the ultimate Mothers Day gift/trophy, presented by Brian and Jan Mills. ("But I did it for you, Mum...").
Daryl Spence was mothers favourite on the day as he posted a winning 45 points (9 shots better than handicap). Daryl finished strongly while Charlie McDonald faded in the later holes to manage a competitive 44 points. Tracker and Stewart Tahana and Mick Simpson were close behind (43, 41 and 40 points) while Glenn Piazza did considerable damage to his handicap with 41 points. Marty Weise claimed the special ball with 19 points. Scott Nolan proved that he is a complete athlete as he shot two eagles (scoring 3 shots on the par 5, 3rd hole and 2 on the par 4, 13th hole). This was the highlight of Scottys otherwise ordinary round.

Don Grimston was the Progressive Comp winner with 55 points. Nearest to the pins went to Wally Thorn (another mention!) on the par 3, 8th hole and Tracker Tahana who won the drive and pitch on the 16th. Charlie McDonald and (ring in) Scotty Nolan successfully defended the Cock o' the Walk against Eddie Sivell and Tracker Tahana, with a 5 up and 4 to play victory. Stewart Tahana and partner are the next glory seekers in this much watched perpetual challenge.

After 4 rounds of the Barry Pengelly Consistency (The Baz), Billy McMahon, with an average 39.2, still maintains a huge lead (15 points) over his nearest rivals, Mick Simpson, of Chicken Dance fame and Disco Jansen (average 36.2 and 35.6). There is a long way yet to go in this consistency competition - with 8 more rounds to go and the best 8 for the year to count, gross standings do not give a good idea of the final outcome this early in the season. Five players who have played less than 5 rounds are averaging over 40 points.

Experience dominates Midweek

As a golfer who is currently farewelling his physical peak your scribe is much encouraged by this weeks Goulburn Soldiers Club Midweek Competition results. Just as cream comes to the top, rock beats scissors and hot air rises... our veteran golfers proved that age is no barrier to success in golf. Our lady golfers are also proving that gender is no obstacle in the quest for the perfect round. "Wild" Wally Thorn headed the senior charge as he posted an amazing 30 points for his 12 hole round, forgoing chivalry and edging out Beryl Gray who posted a very worthy 29 points. Continuing the theme, Kevin Peterson and Wayne James were also in the mix with 27 and 25 points, while Helen Carne won the special ball with 10. Not one all singing and dancing super sized driver or handbrake and airbag equipped wedge were in sight as our more seasoned golfers showed the way. Experience recommends the straight and narrow, the steady approach, the confidence of knowledge and a well worn putter. This trend is an excellent recommendation for our new handicapping system. Younger golfers should not be discouraged. Stick at it. Time is on your side.

Sunday Fourball Best Ball

Last Sunday the Tully Park committee presentyed a Four Ball Best Ball competition for the enjoyment of members. This was also held in conjunction with the NSW 4BBB comp (see below). Adam Boxsell and Tracker Tahana recorded an excellent 48 points with 12 pars and 2 birdies between them. Next in line were Stewart Tahana and Roger Holgate along with Mick and Greg Hosking on 46 points. "Millsy and Billsy" rounded out the ball rundown with 45 points, on a countback.

Marty Hunter claimed the nearest to The Pin prize on the 7th hole while Tracker Tahana (somehow) got inside Lindsay Gegg for the Drive and Pitch on the 12th hole. Chuck and Mart successfully defended the Cock O' The Walk against Roy "Teddy" McNair and Glen "That's The Spirit" Piazza. In their defence, "Teddy" needed a hug, and Glen was playing his first comp round in 14 or so years. Next weeks bout sees Charlie and Marty up against Eddie Sivell and his (yet to be announced) partner.

Next Sunday the committee has scheduled a single stableford event along with Round 5 of the Barry Pengelly Consistency competition. The Mothers Day trophy is presented by Jan and Brian Mills, and, for the winner, is guaranteed to soothe any post round female disharmony.

The Tully Park Charity Golf Day is on the following Sunday (15th May) with tee off from 7.30 until 9am. It will be  supporting the Goulburn Prostate Cancer Support Group and will be a single stableford event for handicap golfers and a Callaway competition for golfers without handicaps. Great prizes will be on offer as well as a good dose of Tully Park hospitality.

A Vets comp is also underway each Thursday with tees available from 9 to 11am. The Vets comp is open to golfers over 50 years of age. The committee is concerned that the Vets competition may prove to be a very popular event, so photo identification, birth certificates and drivers licences will be required to keep the buggers honest. Vets are welcome from any club, with green fees waived (comp fee only to be paid) for this competition.

NSW 4BBB Championships - Club Round

Each year the NSW Golf Association runs the NSW Four Ball Best Ball Championsips. Local qualifiers progress to a District (ACT Monaro) final< the winner of which gains entry to the State final - this year at Bonville Golf Reort, Coffs Harbour, expenses paid. Almost 6 years ago, Paul Todkill and Charlie McDonald made it through to the final round. Reports have it that Chuck and Toddy enjoyed the NSWGA hospitality a lot, and that the course was tough. That is their story anyway.

This years qualifiers for the second, district round were Adam Boxsell and Tracker Tahana, Brian Mills and Bill McMahon and Marty Hunter and Charlie McDonald with reserve teams Ron Nunn/Disco Jansen and Mick Simpson/Nathan Rumbos. Unfortunately (and quite correctly) the NSW 4BBB has an over18 policy, so some of the Sunday comp winners (see above) were ineligible.
